I had a bunch of felt left over after making the antennae, so I cut the feathers out by hand and glued them on to give the piece some texture
— a first for me, since I’ve just painted previous paper mache heads. (The antennae feathers are made from a felt “sleeve” that I sewed to fit over knitting needles.)

Everybody asks about the eyes, and this is the secret: glowing ball decorations from the dollar store! I always challenge myself to spend as little as possible on my costume each year, just to see what I can come up with within that constraint. I glued them into the frame with the battery compartments accessible from the inside.

The basic frame with the paper mache completed and the mesh face fabric installed. I find paper mache to be an excellent building material for Halloween helmets, since it’s lightweight, decently durable, and super cheap.

I built the frame using wire and duct tape structured around a cowboy hat, allowing for a comfortable internal fit. Learning from my mistakes on past helmets, I left space at the back to glue in a bag of dried beans as counterweight for the eyes, ensuring the head doesn’t slide down.

I enlarged the drawings onto parchment paper, then used a lightbox to trace them onto fabric for embroidering.

This was three months of my life. I sewed all of the patches by hand with an embroidery hoop, then sewed them onto my jumpsuit.

From sketch to pattern! I started this project thinking I’d paint the patches, doodling my favorite animals in different colors. Once I realized embroidery would be cooler (and more durable), I switched to a black-and-white color scheme.

With early ideas, we kicked around paper cutouts, washable paint, and this parchment paper sandwich of dead flies (it was as gross as it sounded), before we realized duct tape was the way to go: it would make our typography cheap and easy to install while also durable enough to withstand foot traffic.

Keeping in mind the blocky visual style duct tape affords, we selected a typeface and an illustration style that was reminiscent of old arcade games such as Space Invaders to nudge people towards a playful attitude. <br />

We went with “Smash, Don’t Pass” because it was punchy and had a strong call to action, all while leveraging the humor of the euphemism to be memorable and inspire playful interaction.<br />

The helmet pre-paint, once I’d sculpted the eyes with modeling clay and done the final layer of paper mache. The whole thing came together for less than ten bucks.

Testing out a draft with a full-scale printout. We made the signage immersive at low and high levels of interaction. So, while users can get the full experience in just a few seconds, users with a bit more time can dive into the world of the machine through its unorthodox labeling.<br />

We picked a vending machine since they’re easy to use and everyone knows what they <i>think </i>they’re gonna get, making it all the weirder to get an absurdism instead of a soda can. We drew inspiration from Japanese vending machine graphics to grab attention.<br />

The machine was inspired by Darko Suvin’s concept of “cognitive estrangement”—that presenting familiar things in an unfamiliar way forces us to reconsider our assumptions —and the simple fact that absurdity is funny. We looked for an everyday interaction we could subvert to introduce humor, such as a printer, a photobooth, or a coffee machine.<br />
